Needless to say, the VMAs are one of the most anticipated events of the year and 2016 was no exception. With headliners like Britney Spears, Beyoncé, and Kanye West, viewers were guaranteed one heck of a night. Here are some of the highlights-or in some cases, lowlights-of the night.

Britney Spears, VMA Queen, and what does she do with her new song that has swept the nation? Only sing ‘Make Me’ and gets a little touchy with rapper, G-Eazy. There were rumors that made it sound like the Pop Princess was bringing her snake back from ‘Slave 4 U’ and everyone was just dying to see that! Though her performance was entertaining, it wasn’t as spectacular as viewers would’ve hoped. Not to mention she was after Beyoncé.

This reporter is thirsty, can we get some “Lemonade” up in here? Beyoncé sure rocked the house with her 16 minute performance featuring songs like ‘Formation,’ ‘Hold Up,’ and ‘Hurt Yourself’ from her latest visual album with an outstanding amount of dancers. From smashing a camera with a baseball bat to “killing” off her dancers one by one, this was the best performance at this year’s VMAs. Go Queen B!

Make way celebrities! These gymnastics girls are swinging their way to the white carpet and looking fabulous while doing so, but one member short of the Final Five. Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez, and Simone Biles were present but unfortunately Gabby Douglas had to miss the show due to a severe illness that sent her to the hospital.

Lucky for America, she later posted a picture of herself on Instagram, cuddled up in blankets, captioned, “Out of the hospital & resting comfortably! #FinalFive so sad I can’t be wit u all to present tonight @MTV thank u xoxo #VMAs #myview.”

This was definitely another high. Not to mention Michael Phelps poked fun at himself before introducing rapper, Future.

Kanye West. Need I say more? Now, he didn’t do anything over the top like last year ‘KANYE FOR 2020’ or throw much shade at Taylor Swift like many were expecting, but he did start out by paying tribute to none other than himself.

The VMAs are where Kanye presents his most scandalous outbreaks like in 2009 when he jumped onstage while Taylor Swift was accepting her award and blatantly said that it should have gone to Beyoncé. 2016 and he’s still commenting on how much he loves Beyoncé by saying, “Later tonight ‘Famous’ might lose to Beyoncé but I can’t be mad, I’m always wishing for Beyoncé to win.” Oh Kanye…
