“All the girls are girling, girling.” LE SSERAFIM has done it again, showing their commendable range of talent. From Amapiano in their EP “Easy’ to house and EDM in their new mini album ‘Crazy,’ these girls are never backing down when it comes to talent.
The fourth mini album contains title tracks “ Crazy,” “Pierrot,” “1-800-hot-n-fun,” “Crazier” and “Chasing Lightning.” These songs mostly stem from different genres, “Crazy” being [house/edm] music, “Pierrot” taking its influence from [hip-hop/rap], “Chasing Lightning” having a [techno] type beat, “Crazier” being [Korean ballad] and finally “1-800-hot-n-fun,” the English track on this album, which was performed at Coachella earlier this year going hardcore with [rock].
These songs are catchy and engaging and for sure bring back fun when it comes to music. Some of the songs on this album also contain deeper meaning.
Chasing Lightning is the first song on the album, the members talk in their native language which include English, Japanese and Korean. There is a techno beat that adds to the assertiveness and seriousness the girls are trying to convey. There are two voices portrayed by all the members.
In the first half of the song, the members say things they want to do and another member says why they shouldn’t do it. For example, Eunchae says, “I can’t hide my feelings, I’m gonna say I wanna be loved,” and Sakura responds “But don’t you need to earn love? / People won’t like it if you say that.” This lyric obviously represents certain individuals that nest online and reduce the members’ self esteem while disregarding the facts that they are humans with feelings as well.
Fortunately, in the second half of the song, the members talk about what they want to do and finally, the other member replies positively in return. Euchae repeats the same line, “I can’t hide my feelings, I’m gonna say I wanna be loved,” and Sakura positively responds, “Then just say it / It’ll feel better than keeping it in and feeling frustrated / Don’t you think?.” Essentially, they are chasing the lightning because they can’t change the weather, meaning that they can’t change reality but they can alter their perspective on it.
On other notes, the title track “Crazy” is the second and only with a music video. The music video captures a different style of dancing, not prominent in K-pop, it’s vogue. Vogue is a style of dancing that rose from the Harlem ballroom scene in the late 1980s. It started as mimicking the poses of models on magazines to throw “shade” and then evolved to more acrobatic moves to upbeat music. The Juicy House of Couture, a voguing group were a part of the voguing shown in the MV. This representation of vogue by its creators — queer people of color — shows a coming shift in K-pop when it comes to representation.
This song gathered attention from the K-pop community as they saw the inserting and different direction LE SSERAFIM was taking. The lyrics and beat of the song also gathered attention as the chorus is very catchy. It brings the repetition of “Da-da-da-da” to then switching to “Act like an angel dress like crazy.” In the beginning of the song, the repetition of “All the girls are girling” and the dance style of waacking performed is also so captivating, especially synchronized.
Pierrot often symbolizes a person who masks themselves in order to hide their true feelings and opinions. It is the third song in the mini album. This song is mainly focused on women and the expectation for conformity and how they don’t have to follow it and pretend for the public as seen in the lyric “Good girl, be a doll.” They even go as far as mentioning some prominent names like Kim Wan Sun whose song “Pierrot smiles at us” is sampled at the beginning. They also mention Uhm Jung-Hwa, who is considered an influential figure in the Korean entertainment industry. Other successful female Korean artists like IU and Lee Hyo-ri are also mentioned.
The second to last song on “Crazy” is “1-800-hot-n-fun.” This song matches the vibe of their title track “Crazy” as it’s fun and it really highlights being crazy and lively. This song is centered around a party as heard in lyrics like “I like to dance when I party, I like to kiss everybody.” The repetition of “1-800-hot-n fun” with a sassy tone and rock music in the background very much represents what this song is really about, the fun and craziness of life.
Finally, the last song on this album, “Crazier.” This song is comparable to “Chasing Lightning” as it talks about the emotions of the members more. These feelings of uncertainty probably spawned in the girls during the pouring amount of hate entering the summer of this year. People spent so much time thinking, “Another day of chasing her on the screen” as sung in the song. Waging “war” against poor girls who couldn’t do anything but watch. Although it’s sad that emotions like that are being poured out in this song, the somber sound it comes with makes this song so beautiful. The angelic dragging of the vowels at the end of words like “who” and “you” amplifies the sadness and beauty that this song brings.
The girls of LE SSERAFIM have worked hard for this comeback, their talent is never going to be disproven and they will hopefully continue to grow as time goes on.
