Under the bright stadium lights, Bill Javkhlan darts along the sidelines, camera in hand, ready to capture the next big play. His focus is sharp as he adjusts his lens, waiting for that perfect moment. A touchdown, a victory celebration, or a coach’s animated reaction. Every shot tells a story, and Javkhlan is determined to make each one count.
“Mr. Paul, the original sponsor of the yearbook, got me into taking photos, and it spiraled from there,” Javkhlan said. “He’s retired now but his effect is well pronounced.”
Photographing sports isn’t always easy, though. Different sports present their own unique challenges.
“I face many challenges when taking photos of different sports, like special rules and different lighting,” Javkhlan said. “I approach each with special equipment if needed and then keep adjusting my camera settings until it’s perfect.”
When it comes to capturing the action, Javkhlan’s process is all about staying on his toes. He’s constantly moving, adjusting his position to catch the best angles and anticipate the next big play. Whether it’s on the sidelines or near the goal, he knows timing and placement are everything.
“My thought process during a football game is basically keep moving. It’s very fast-paced, but a saving grace is that it’s so long,” Javkhlan said. “I have lots of time to adjust my camera settings. I usually look for cool moments like a touchdown or 50-yard pass.”
Javkhlan’s involvement in the yearbook club has also played a major role in shaping his photography skills. His work with the club helped him understand what kinds of shots are needed to tell the full story of a game. He collaborates closely with players and coaches to ensure he captures the moments that matter most, whether it’s the coach celebrating a big win or a player making the game-winning play.
“Seeing how many people show up to support the players always makes me realize that this sport is bigger than just the players or the coach,” Javkhlan said. “It’s always really inspiring to see.”
This sense of community is what drives Javkhlan to keep capturing moments on and off the field. He sees his photos as more than just action shots. They’re a way to highlight the passion and support that fuel each game. Whether it’s the excitement of the players or the cheers from the stands, he aims to preserve the heart of every event he covers.
“I’ve seen his pictures transform from simple practice pictures to vivid, energetic captures of intense sports moments,” yearbook Co-Editor-in-Chief Hanan Habaheh said. “He practices with his camera in his free time, and never takes a spare minute for granted.”
