Sophomore Class Club plans and participates in activities for the students of PHS and community throughout the school year.
“To spread the word to their peers about the main events that are happening in the community and in their school,” Sophomore class teacher sponsor Toni Madl said. “It is so important for students to get involved and stay involved.”
Sophomore Class Club decorated the first and second floor of the school for the week of Homecoming according to the theme, City of Stars. Students stayed after school to collaborate with each other and set up decorations that the members of the club had decided on during the previous meeting.
“We do have to order the decorations,” Madl said. “In the past, we’ve done fundraising events where we’ve raised money to keep our account positive, and we use that money to purchase decorations.”
“We were thinking about what decorations to buy from Amazon,” Sophomore Class Club member Sammie Barjon said. “We tell her what we think would look cute and then she buys it and we decorate.”
Sophomore Class Club also participated in the PHS Trick or Treat Night by decorating a room and organizing games. Students will celebrate World Day of Kindness by passing out candy and cards with positive messages on them by the main entrance in the morning.
“Sophomore Year we do a community outreach,” Madl said. “We’ve held the collection for the Pirate Cove one year, we did a collection for Lurie Children’s Hospital, and then we presented Lurie Children’s Hospital with a check of all the money we’ve raised.”
Sophomore Class Club sponsored a Kona Ice Truck to come to the school during Homecoming Week. Students could bring money and go outside the school during their lunch period and enjoy the shaved ice.
“And what’s nice about class clubs is they start as freshman year,” Madl said. “Freshman and sophomore year are more low commitment, and then as you get into junior year, where you’re planning prom, and then even senior year, where you’re planning all the fun senior activities and graduation, I feel like students who normally wouldn’t step up or feel like they have a voice in something, it’s a way for them to voice their opinion on things.”
The class clubs use an instagram page page to post meeting updates and other details. Sophomore Club meets every other Thursday at 7:40 a.m. in room 191.
