5 must-try foods in Philadelphia

This year five Cutlass reporters went to Philadelphia for the JEA/NSPA National Journalism Convention.  Along the way, we tried various foods across the city and decided to rank the top five things we ate.
5 must-try foods in Philadelphia
#5: Luscious Dumplings

939 Race St, Philadelphia, PA 19107

Hidden in the streets of Philadelphia’s Chinatown, Luscious Dumplings resides. A menu on the glass displayed a plethora of delicious dishes that they served. I got to experience soup dumplings for the first time while at Luscious Dumplings. I am now a fan, as I bit into the dumplings savory soup poured out and created a fun and enjoyable eating experience. After our main courses we had the opportunity to eat a pig shaped bao for dessert. The bao was filled with a sweet cream custard that was sweet but not overbearing. Overall this restaurant created a wonderful experience for food and a dip into the Chinese ethnic enclave in Philly.

#4: The Go Birds Shake
#4: The Go Birds Shake

Bassetts Ice Cream — 45 N 12th St, Philadelphia, PA 19107

If you enjoy the Shamrock shake from McDonald’s then you are going to love this Shake. The go birds shake (Themed after the Philadelphia Eagles football team) was personal favorite dessert from our trip to Philadelphia. It was available at vthe Reading Market at an ice cream shop. It was a mint flavor with chocolate and ice cream. The Green and white colors made it resemble the team it was named after and the whip cream and sprinkles on top added to the aesthetic of the shake. It was a delicious dessert that probably was the worst thing I had for me health-wise throughout the trip, but the flavors that were combined definitely made it worth.

#3: The Famous 4th Street Cookie Company

1136 Arch St, Philadelphia, PA 19107

Located in the Reading Terminal, 4th Street Cookie Company offers an array of flavors such as apple pie and toffee pecan. They have been in business since the late ’70s and you can tell as there is a sense of comfort with the shop. On our trip we passed by this place numerous times without stopping to see the beautiful collection of cookies they had to offer. On the last day I stopped to get a few cookies. Chocolate chip, apple pie and blueberry muffin caught my eye. This place does a great job a creating new flavors that work while still keeping the classic flavors like chocolate chip.

#2: Alice Pizza
#2: Alice Pizza

235 S 15th St, Philadelphia, PA 19102

A hidden gem that we found while going to get lunch in Philadelphia was Alice’s pizza. Alice’s was highly reviewed by the locals and we found out why. The pizza selection was unique and offered a wide variety. We got the pepperoni pizza and the salami pizza. Both were mouthwatering and delicious the salmi was our favorite offering a unique pizza style that not many places have. If you are a pizza lover and visiting Philadelphia, this is a great place to eat at. The crust was crispy and the sauce and cheese was warm and had a nice spice to it from the salami. Overall this was a really great place with some unique pizza. If you are a pizza lover in downtown Philadelphia this is a must visit.

#1: Philly Cheesesteak

1136 Arch St, Philadelphia, PA 19107

Finally we have our favorite food from the trip. The iconic Philly Cheese Steak. This sandwich is so good, it’s worth it to make a trip to Philadelphia just to get it. As we waited in line in the Reading Terminal market, we watched them chop up the meat and every step of it being made. The chopped steak with the onions and buns made for the perfect combination and the ideal meat sandwich. This is our favorite food from the trip and a must get if you are in Philadelphia.
