Grammy award winning Icelandic-Chinese singer, Laufey Lin, has teased and dazzled her fans by slowly releasing additions to her 2022 album, “A Very Laufey Holiday,” which currently contains melodic tunes such as “Christmas Dreaming” as well as a collaboration with British singer, Dodie, called “Keep Me Warm.”
These additions are Laufey’s first releases since her critically acclaimed album, “Bewitched,” and her outstanding partner album, “Bewitched: the Goddess Edition.”
Starting off strong, on Nov. 1, she released both the song and music video for her rendition of the classic Christmas track, “Santa Baby,” originally released in 1953 by artist Eartha Kitt.
The music video is a masterful, hot-chocolate clutching, Christmas-awaiting, fun production that pulls influences from movie director Wes Anderson as well as classic Christmas ballet productions, such as The Nutcracker.
The song tells a story of a girl who just wants an extraordinary amount of presents from Santa. Even if some of them are a little on the pricey side. And she deserves it—since she’s been on the nice list all year.
“Santa baby, I want a yacht and really that’s not a lot. Been an angel all year.”
The combination of silly lyrics as well as Laufey’s stage show make for a magical partnership that has the viewer smiling the entire watch.
Towards the end of the video, a handsome young Santa comes up to her, bearing gifts, but also trying a little too hard to get her number. As she finishes up singing, Laufey tries to let him down in the nicest way possible and gracefully backs away with the ballerinas trailing behind her.
But he’s a persistent guy, so she comically flicks him off and finishes her song, cheerfully without the presence of a man. And as the cherry on top, Wes Anderson constant, Bill Murray, presents the production at the beginning as well as ends it. With a smart quip and a smile, Murray wishes the viewer “Merry Christmas”.
Laufey’s smooth voice and comical interpretation of the song makes for a fresh new Christmas tune that deserves to be on repeat for the rest of the season.
Be on the lookout for more holiday songs from Laufey coming your way in the upcoming months. And catch her other new song, Christmas Magic, in Chris Evans’ new movie, Red One, now playing in theaters.
