The Palatine Varsity Boys Baseball team moved into spring break on a high, following a win against Carmel Catholic High School on Friday, March 21.
“We have 13 seniors, so a lot of returning players, so there’s some familiarity with what we do,” said varsity baseball coach Brent Carroll.
These seniors started the game off strong with Toby Peterson hitting a home run in the bottom of the first inning, putting the Pirates on the scoreboard.
Additionally, Carter Monroe, Jack Houser, and Joe Riley all contributed to the win, with the final score being 7-4.
This win ended a streak of losses against Carmel Catholic High School, with their matchup last season ending in a 5-7 loss in 2024.
“We’ve got a lot of depth. We’ve got some great sophomore pieces, and I’ve heard nothing but positive things from our freshman class. So hopefully they’re able to compliment each other and build a roster similar to what we have this year,” Carroll said.
As with all spring sports, weather continues to be a factor, whether it’s field conditions or temperatures, there are always cancellations and rescheduling that must take place.
It’s frustrating. I mean, we’ve been fortunate. We’ve had some beautiful days… and then now you kind of play the waiting game,” Carroll said.
The varsity team is currently 4-2 coming out of spring break, with many more games to come in the next few weeks of the spring season. This week, the boys are playing away this afternoon, with more games scheduled over the weekend.
“We understand we’re going to win some, we’re going to lose some, but if we continue to grow from our mistakes and not make those same mistakes, that we’ll put ourselves in a good position at the end of the year,” Carroll said.
