Palatine High School, the oldest high school in District 211, recently celebrated its 150th year. Over the course of time, PHS has shaped the Palatine community and impacted thousands of lives with its history, exceptional education and diverse student body.
To commemorate this milestone, students gathered on the football field on the first day of school to form a giant “150.” The moment was captured by the Daily Herald’s drone and broadcast overhead by WGN News. Students cheered as the drone and news helicopter circled above.
The gathering wasn’t just about taking a picture to add to the school’s growing history. It symbolized the generations of students, staff and teachers who, from different backgrounds, have worked together in unity for decades.

Attiya Mirza, who specializes in guided study halls and leads the cricket club, described Palatine’s diversity as a key part of its story. “The school is situated in a community where diverse students come from, and having all the different traditions and values teaches students respect and acceptance,” Mirza said.
Erika Dix, a teacher in the Student Success Center, echoed that sentiment. “The evolution of the school can be seen in the students that come out of it. My children are doing great in college, and I think a lot of the diversity in the school has made it a great community to be a part of,” she said.
Her son, PJ, a 2023 graduate, recalled enjoying the orchestra program, which brought back many good memories. He described PHS as a “really awesome school” that has thrived since its earliest days as a community center.
Ultimately, Palatine High School has played a central role in shaping the community around it — showing how working together leads to lasting success.
