Palatine native Nabeela Syed is already established in Illinois politics at age 26 as a state representative and has set her sights higher as she pursues the nomination for state Senate in Illinois District 26. Syed is a former Fremd Viking, Muslim, daughter of immigrants and member of the Democratic Party.
Syed (D-51) will be running in a Senate district that covers multiple towns, including Palatine. If elected she will be the youngest person in the Illinois senate. Last month, she kicked off her election campaign.
Syed said she is running for office to provide a younger voice to the Senate while running on key issues like advocating for equal rights, stricter gun laws and economic policies that help small businesses.
Syed strongly encourages people, especially members of Gen Z, to start getting involved in politics. “Find a campaign or local organization that you resonate with, because the decisions that are being made will impact future generations,” she said.

Syed is also running on other issues such as health care reform. Specifically insurance coverage for breast cancer screenings along with reproductive choice. She also advocates to fight corruption such as when she backed House Bill 351, which prevents individuals convicted of crimes such as perjury or bribery from holding positions in elected office.
“Some politicians are thinking about taking (away) Social Security benefits,” Syed said, “and keeping our Social Security benefits is not on their radar because many politicians are focused on short term issues instead of focusing on long-term issues.”
Drawing on her experience as a Gen Z lawmaker, she highlighted the importance of diverse representation and hopes for equal opportunities for people from all walks of life. Syed is a core believer in accessible immigration laws.
Syed said that “after seeing the opportunities her parents were offered and had to fight for and their ability to settle in the U.S. and live a fulfilled life; she believes that should be offered to everyone.” Her parents are immigrants from India.
Syed has the support of Illinois State Senate President Don Harmon, who endorsed her after she officially launched her campaign. After Harmon’s speech, Syed spoke as well, focusing on raising more money towards the campaign.
In 2026 Syed will face off against incumbent Sen. Darby Hills (R-26) from Barrington Hills. She is a former prosecutor who is running on key issues such as lowering drug prescription prices and taxes. She is a strong advocate for a pro-business environment. Syed may face some challenges as Hills has raised more money in a Republican stronghold area. Expect a close race that could have long term effects on Illinois politics.
