Toasty temperatures, a buzzing crowd, and the pounding of dozens of feet upon the course set the stage for this year’s Palatine Invite. The meet was held at Deer Grove East this Saturday Sep 27, drawing in strong competition from states ranging as far as California. With fast times, standout performances, and plenty of excitement, the event once again proved why it’s the highlight of the cross country season.
Against a field of over 200 runners, Palatine’s own Alexander Krieg rose to the challenge, securing an overall third place finish. He crossed the three mile finish line in 14:49.18, showcasing both his speed and endurance in this highly competitive race.
“Placing high in a meet like this one definitely feels good,” Krieg said. “On the other hand, it stings a little knowing on my best day I could’ve done better or even won. Though it definitely feels good running with the best in the states and placing that high.”

The Lady Pirates’ resilience was on full display during the girls’ race, where sophomore Ellie Garret battled through adversity. After suffering a painful spike injury at the very start of her race, she refused to back down, pushing through the pain towards the finish line. Garret’s resilience and commitment reflected the team’s determination to compete no matter the circumstances
Nicknamed the “Meet of Champions,” the long awaited Palatine Invite has been an annual event for around 50 years. The meet is an immense part of cross country tradition, and is a great opportunity for teams from all over to compete.
“Competing at the Palatine Invite is super fun,” junior Greta Kerr said. “I love seeing all the teams and sponsors, and the meet is a lot more for us than just a race. It’s cool to be around the running community, and it’s very special to be able to host.”
Runners are given the chance to work the meet as well as assist in handing out awards. Seen as a lively event surrounded by the spirit of the Palatine community, those participating view it as more than just another race.
The Pirates cross country team faces the Fremd Vikings this upcoming Tuesday in an exciting crosstown matchup.
