As the school year progresses and students settle into the new school year at Palatine High School, the student council has already started setting goals to improve this year’s student council as well as planning for events.
“Our main goal is to maintain our membership throughout the year,” student council head James Nowak said. “I find that we have a lot of members in the beginning of the year, when there’s all the excitement and homecoming. The second semester starts to dwindle.”
Membership retention is one goal this year’s students council hopes to improve on from previous years and keep members interested in important events and school decisions throughout the year.
They also have started planning and preparing for upcoming events such as homecoming. This year being an important anniversary of Palatine High School has some high expectations for this student council.
“Being the 150th we are bringing back some traditions that we haven’t done in a long time,” Nowak said.
These upcoming events that the student council are planning are important in keeping their members engaged and involved as well as the students’ excitement for these special events.
Nowak was also very pleased with last year’s homecoming with how the outside setting turned out as well as the bonfire.
“We got a lot of positive feedback,” Nowak said.
Helping maintain school spirit as well as interest in the student council. The student council has faced some challenges ever since the removal of the homeroom.
“Our biggest challenge has been advertising what we are doing,” Nowak said.
This is a major challenge for the student council as many students just don’t know of the events they plan and therefore don’t attend them.
But this year’s student council is trying to come up with “new creative ways to get the word out,” Nowak said. They are working to make these events a success and keep members involved and motivated year round.
The student council is ready for this school year and is ready to set goals and take on challenges and is always looking for new students with creative ideas to join.
“We are always looking for new members,” Nowak said. “So hopefully we drum up some excited people who have some more creative ideas.”
