Pop star Tate McRae visited Chicago for the second time on the “Miss Possessive Tour” on Oct. 21. The set list included 23 of her smash hits that included her latest releases as well as the songs that launched her career.
The concert was opened by rising pop artist, Alessi Rose, who sang her original songs for Chicago. Rose is an indie/pop rock artist from the UK, who is known for uploading her songs to social media. She opened for Noah Kahan last year after releasing various singles and EPs.
McRae started off with the tour’s namesake, “Miss Possessive,” which is the opening track on her album, “So Close To What.” The majority of the concert had songs from this album as well as her popular album, “Think Later.” which contains hits like “Greedy”, “Exes”, and “Run For the Hills”. Her newest single, “Tit For Tat,” was released in Sept. and was added to her tour performances.
McRae also thrilled fans by singing some of her first songs that she wrote as a teenage YouTuber. One of her earliest and most successful songs, “You Broke Me First”, was a crowd favorite. The song is a perfect example of McRae musical range as a song writer. “You Broke Me First” is such a contrast to some of her newer music, like “Sports Car”, which is based on a more iconic energy than a heartbroken one. The mix of emotional slow paced songs and upbeat dance music was a perfect balance for Tate’s devoted fans.
As McRae was setting up on the “B-stage” where she sang “Greenlight” and “Nostalgia,” she was closer to audience members who weren’t in the floor. She gave Chicago a heartfelt speech about how her career started from her early YouTube hits, talking about how her original fanbase grew up with her and her music. McRae’s first song, “One Day”, created a special moment where she sang directly to those who have been with her throughout her journey.
The dancing seen in the “Miss Possessive Tour” is what made the tour so memorable. McRae’s career started with her passion for dance, and the choreography in her performances showcases all of her talent. Her backup dancers are not to be looked over either, with excited fans cheering as each dancer gave their own unique performance during an extended version of her song “Revolving Door.”
Overall, “The Miss Possessive Tour” has had an extremely positive response from fans, many considering it to be one of the best shows they’ve seen.
PHS sophomore Emma Cichanski, said it was, “The best concert ever.”
Other fans have felt the same, telling TikTok that they don’t know what to do after they finally see the show they’ve been waiting for since tickets went on sale months ago.
The “Miss Possessive Tour” was an amazing experience for all fans, including myself. McRae showcased her amazing vocals throughout the setlist, and allowed her dancers and band to show off as well. McRae is an artist who sounds even better live than on her streaming services, and her dance skills made the show the success that it was. Everything from the intense choreography to the added vocal riffs screamed “pop star”, and McRae reintroduced herself to the world as “Miss Possessive.”
