The Palatine girls’ soccer team defeated Fremd to capture the Kinsella Cup on Friday night. The final score was 2-1 with Palatine goals by senior Kellie Reynolds and sophomore Mackenzie Fillian. This win brings Palatine up to fourth in the MSL standings and brings their record to 4-2.

The crosstown classic kicked off at 6 o’clock Friday night. The Pirates sprang to action in the first half and kept themselves in the game by scoring 2 goals to the Viking’s 1. Both teams battled hard in the second half; with Palatine successfully fending off Fremd’s attempts on goal.

“No one was really prepared at first. But after the first shot on goal I think we really go ourselves together and pulled out a good win.” Sophomore Fran Falato said.

The Palatine Celtic Soccer Club presents the Jimmy Kinsella High School Cup each year to the winner of the varsity crosstown classic games– Palatine vs. William Fremd high school soccer matches. The Kinsella Cup is dedicated to Jimmy Kinsella who, in part, founded the Palatine Celtic Soccer Club in 1968.

The cup has moved back and forth between Palatine and Fremd every year for the past four years. This year, though, Palatine won a decisive victory and gets to keep the cup for the second year in a row.

With Palatine moving up in the rankings, the rest of their season is sure to be a nail-biter. Their next game is Monday, 4/20, versus Barrington. Go pirates!
