Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated to commemorate the feast shared with the Native American peoples who helped the first Plymouth colonists survive through a successful harvest. The first American Thanksgiving happened around 1621. It became a national holiday in 1863 . It has been celebrated ever since on the fourth Thursday of November. Immigrants to America have incorporated their traditions into their own Thanksgivings.
Thanksgiving means different things to different people, but the theme of togetherness has remained constant. Thanksgiving persists even as foods and customs change.
