Classic movie review: Juno
December 13, 2016
The movie Juno directed by Jason Reitman is one of the most amusing films I have ever seen. I would rate this 5 out of 5. The movie’s biggest conflict centers around the difficulties faced when Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) becomes pregnant by Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera) while they’re both in high school. Juno is torn between keeping the baby, giving it up for adoption, or getting an abortion.
Rated PG-13, this film is targeted at adolescents and young adults. It appeals towards this crowd for the sense of humour Juno has despite her struggles with pregnancy which both teenagers and adults can connect to.
The best thing about the film, is how well they casted the characters. I wouldn’t be able to picture anyone else playing Juno since her appearance portrays Junos’ personality so well. Since Ellen Page is known for being a tom-boy, she does a good job acting as Juno. I believe they did the best job at casting Vanessa Loring (Jennifer Garner) as the adoptive mother. Jennifer Garner is known for being the “American sweetheart” in most films she stars in. Her appearance is also very clean cut, so she’s perfect for playing a mid-suburban wife with a picture perfect family.
Music plays a huge role in this movie and sets the tone well. When the movie is calm, the music is upbeat. When the movie is tense, the music turns towards a quicker pace song. The only sound effects used in the movie that I noticed are when the movie writes the time of year. I can’t complain about the music or sound effects in Juno, it’s perfect.
I love everything about Juno. When times get tense we find out that under her sarcastic, tough outer layer, Juno is really a sensitive person that wants the best for her child. Even though Mark (Jason Bateman), the adoptive father, and Juno form a good relationship, I didn’t like him at the end of the film. I didn’t pay much attention to Vanessa, but she ended up being a really good character by the end. I’m so happy with how the movie ended and I could watch it over and over again. With a great plot and humour, it’s by far my go to movie.
