The new roundabout optimizes efficiency

Out of all of the new features Palatine High School has implemented recently, the improvements upon the traffic flow of the parking lot have made a significant impact on the safety of students and their families.

Along with new crosswalks, PHS implemented the new layout of the parking lot over the summer to optimize efficiency and to avoid the hassle of construction taking place during the school year.

“We’ve made remarks for a number of years regarding how fortunate it is that we haven’t had any major incidents in our parking lot,” Assistant Principal Mike Alther says. “Regardless, traffic observers came to our school and viewed the situation for a length of time, deciding that there needed to be a change made in order to improve the flow of cars.”

This decision came in part with a number of improvements made to the school this year, creating a buzz among students who are excited about all of the new facilities and the noticeable changes these improvements have made.

“It’s so much easier to reach first period on time when you’re in a rush,” remarks Senior Luke Kozlowski. “The line of cars is significantly less backed up and the new crosswalks are a nice touch.”

After school, PHS staff assists with traffic by directing cars and acting as crossing guards. This comes as a much appreciated add-on for many parents of students at the high school. The mother of a Palatine senior remarked upon the overall improved functionality of the new traffic system.

“I’m so glad that I’ll get half of my morning back now,” Lisa Vorbroker remarks in between laughter. “I was getting tired of the traffic, last school year especially, but with the new bus-specific lanes and the added crossing guards… we’re so fortunate to be able to receive new implements like these.”
