Varsity poms and color guard hosted a community garage sale on Sept 9 at Palatine High School.

On Saturday morning Palatine’s residents were treated with a fun garage sale prepared by students and staff members. The event occurred during a sunny day from 11am till 4pm in the PHS cafeteria. Many things were sold at the garage sale such as books, clothing, toys, jewelry, and furniture. Families were even able to contribute by baking snacks and serving them to the customers. The amount of items donated was huge and much more kept coming in throughout the morning.

“I believe that it’s a great idea to raise money,” color guard member Lonely Bailon said. “Especially if you are giving up the stuff you don’t use anymore for people who need it the most.”

The teams decided to have an event in order to fundraise money. They’ll be traveling to Florida in the spring and be able to visit DisneyLand and Universal Studios. Color guard and poms both been finding their ways to raise cash, and they’ve now come together to have a garage sale for everybody to participate.

People who wanted to donate to the garage sale were able to do so over the week. All donations were handled and set prices between $1 and $20. Afterwards, the donations that weren’t sold were sent to Community Threads.

“This helps strengthen the bond of poms and color guard,” poms member Danielle Sauerland said. “The event is happening together and is going towards the same cause.”

The event helped the teams join together to perform great work and helped the community connect with Palatine High School’s students. With all the helped they received, poms and color guard were able to raise $2000.

“It went really well,” pom’s coach Ashley Mitchell said. “We had a really big rush in the morning, especially with the volleyball tournament going on.”

Coach Mitchell was the person who organized the event. She was inspired by the concert choir because they made a garage sale event a few years ago and thought it was a good idea to bring it back. Mitchell was so impressed that she wants to host the event again next year.
