Chicago is a city that is known for a variety of events, such as sports and music. But another story of the city is told through artwork that reflects the historical moments experienced in its streets. This is a story explored at the Chicago History Museum.
Students from the club OLAS and the class of Latinx literature joined together to explore what Chicago is all about.
“My favorite part of visiting the Chicago History Museum was being able to learn more about how different cultures and ethnicities have shaped what we know as Chicago today,” senior Leslie Lopez said. “It was so cool to see how colored people have impacted the city we all love to visit.”
Each exhibit has art that demonstrates history. One exhibit, “Designing for Change,” focuses on pieces of protest art. It features creative pieces from artists who have reflected on the voices of activists who fought for equal rights, including women’s rights, Black rights, and LGBTQ+ rights.
Not only did the museum focus on the many leaders who used their voices to protest around the city, but it also highlighted the huge support from the Latinx community that has embraced their culture all around Chicago.
“My favorite part of the museum was the Latino exhibit,” senior Julissa Mercado said. “I loved the art and how it showcased my culture. It reminded me why it’s important to remember our roots and recognize the impact the Latino communities have had on this country, especially here in Chicago.”
Like the many communities that have used their voices for advancement, the Latinx community continues to speak up peacefully for change and equality. Individuals embrace Latinx culture in various ways, from wearing traditional folclórico dresses to expressing their voices in unions.
Ultimately, the Chicago History Museum has shown visitors, like students from Latinx literature and OLAS, what Chicago is all about. It reflects on the historic events that the streets of Chicago have faced through represented art pieces. This exhibit focuses on the huge Latinx community who embrace their culture and continues to unite in speaking up on today’s issues.
