Palatine High School participated in its first Writers Day since before the pandemic. It was held this Wednesday, March 18 and was attended by all English classes.
In the past, there was only one presenter for every period. This year, students were able to choose what session they wanted based on their own interests. It included eight periods of sessions, giving students over 40 choices throughout the day.
“I wanted the day to be a bit more interactive, engaging and intimate,” Writers Day organizer and Palatine English teacher Brent Fisher said. “The previous format felt very hit or miss sometimes.”
The Writers Day organizers wanted to make sure they had a variety of different sessions for the students by covering as many different aspects of writing as possible. The guest speakers include experienced authors, poets, singers, songwriters, editors and even writers from Palatine’s very own Cutlass Newspaper.
“We want the lineup to be robust and for students to have choices that don’t feel like three of the same things,” Fisher said.
Organizers also ran raffles for students that provided them with highly rated books and other fun gifts.
“Writers Day had a huge impact on me when I was a student here at Palatine High School,” Fisher said. “Fremd has a whole Writers Week and those cross-town green and gold Vikings shouldn’t have something that we don’t have.”
