“No Kings Day” is a series of protests in the U.S. The slogan represents an opposition that holds the current registration of power. Protesters have used it to criticize the power of the current U.S. president, Donald Trump.
On Mar. 28, communities across the U.S., including along Palatine’s Northwest Highway, held nonviolent protests in response to ongoing national issues, particularly concerns about immigration policies and their impact on families.
“I am well aware that I am a privileged person, and because I am in this place, it’s my responsibility to not turn a blind eye to these things,” protester Kelly Travers said.
The group behind “No Kings Day” uses platforms such as Instagram and its official website to inform the public about upcoming demonstrations and share its message. The organization stated that the March 28 protest was the largest single-day protest in American history, with an estimated 8 million participants across 35 cities on four continents. This event also marked the third “No Kings Day” protest, showing the continued growth of the movement.
“It is encouraging to continue to go and voice our opinions and just be heard,” protester Marisela Torres said.
Despite strong winds, many people gathered while holding posters and chanting for over two hours. Passing drivers also showed support by honking and giving thumbs ups.In addition to the support from motorists, a crowd of hundreds remained along Northwest Highway, using handmade posters and collective chants to advocate for social change.
Ultimately, “No Kings Day” is a large, growing movement. During recent protests, participants gathered in the community, holding signs about issues such as immigration and government power. These actions show how people come together to support one another and express their opinions on current issues facing the country.
