A series of phishing emails sent to some District 211 student and staff accounts this week has raised questions about how outside actors obtained district email addresses and who was targeted.
Students first reported receiving a phishing email Wednesday evening. The email falsely advertised a part-time job opportunity and directed recipients to click a link and provide personal information, including passwords and financial details.
The District 211 Technology Team sent a districtwide warning Thursday morning, advising students not to click the link or share personal information. Officials told anyone who interacted with the message to change their password through their school’s IT help desk.
Not all students and staff received the emails, and it remains unclear who was targeted or why. Student district-issued email addresses are generally kept private, and the district has not publicly explained how the scammers obtained the addresses or whether any internal systems were compromised.
The incidents have raised broader concerns about student data privacy and the security of school communication systems. District officials urged students and staff to verify unexpected messages and report suspicious emails to their school technology departments.
