The Palatine Basketball team concluded their season with a hard fought loss against the Hersey Huskies on Tuesday night in the IHSA Sectional Semifinals hosted at Fremd High School.

Both the first and second quarters of the game ended in ties, leaving both players and spectators anxiously anticipating a tightly contested second half.
“It was a really good game for about three and a half quarters,” head coach Eric Millstone said. “The other team just made a few more plays down the stretch than we did.”
Palatine entered the matchup familiar with the Huskies after splitting their previous two meetings this season. The Pirates edged out a narrow victory the last time the teams met, while Hersey claimed an equally tight win in triple overtime earlier in the season, continuing a pattern of closely challenging games whenever the two rivals faced off.
Senior forward Tony Balanganayi (#50) stood out as the lead scorer of the game, continuing the consistent offensive presence he has provided for the Pirates all season with his reliable scoring and steady play on both ends of the court.
“It was a phenomenal senior group in terms of their skill and their character,” Millstone said. “I was really happy and proud of the season that these seniors had.”
The Pirates remained competitive throughout much of the game, matching Hersey’s possession for possession and keeping the score close into the fourth quarter. As the final minutes ticked down, Hersey was able to create just enough separation to secure the 64-50 win and advance, bringing Palatine’s season to a close.
“In the last minutes of the game I was trying to stay in the moment and try to come back,” Senior point guard Darrin Dick said. “Once there was under a minute left and we started getting subbed out, accepting it was over was really hard.”
For many seniors on the team, this loss didn’t merely signify not advancing to the next level of the championship, as it meant playing basketball with teammates they had competed alongside for years had ultimately come to an end.
“It was kind of surreal because it all hit in those last few moments that it was the last time I was going to be on the court with those guys,” Senior shooting guard Abram Williams said. “I started to think about all of the memories I made playing with them, and it definitely made me emotional.”
Though the Pirates fell just short in this match, their undeniable effort, commitment to the team, and close bond on the court carried them thus far through a successful season.
“I went up to Tony, someone I’ve played with since second grade and just hugged him,” Dick said. “I couldn’t believe 10 years of playing basketball together was over. I think the outcome of the game wasn’t what we wanted but the season we had was the best in school history.”
