Lucy Foley’s “The Paris Apartment” is a thriller mystery that keeps you engaged till the very end with every moment of tension and jaw-dropping plot twist. It is one of my top ten books of all time, and is one I always find myself returning to no matter how many unread books I have waiting. While it’s a standalone novel, Foley has plenty of equally captivating books worth exploring.
The story follows Jess, who moves to Paris to stay with her half-brother Ben. From the moment she steps onto the property, something feels wrong, and she quickly discovers Ben is nowhere to be found. Attempting to get information from the neighbors only ends in more questions and a feeling that they don’t want Jess there. She is met with cold stares, half-truths, and a clear sense that the building and its tenants are hiding something no one wants found.
Foley tells the story from both Jess’s perspective and the residents of the building, which she uses to slowly reveal both more information and more mystery as the novel progresses. Every chapter adds a detail that seems helpful at first but only ends up raising more questions. With Foley’s descriptions, the building itself starts to feel claustrophobic but elegant and unsettling in all the ways a thriller should be.
One moment that stood out to me was when Jess discovered a hidden room that completely shifted both her and the reader’s understanding of what happened to Ben. It catches the reader off guard yet makes perfect sense in hindsight. Just the description of the atmosphere in this scene makes the book impossible to put down, making the hallway seem dark, tight, and like someone’s watching.
Another memorable element is how Foley portrays each tenant. Each tenant is described as completely their own person with their own story and issues but are ultimately connected to one another. A particularly effective example of this is when one resident’s carefully crafted image starts to crack under pressure and guilt, showing how fear can twist their behavior. These small but important character moments throughout the book deepen the mystery and pull you into the story until you can’t look away.
Overall, The Paris Apartment stands out to me as one of the most compelling mystery novels released in recent years and is definitely worth picking up. With its unsettling atmosphere, diverse perspectives, and twists that make you rethink everything, it easily earns its spot as one of my personal favorites.
