Gen-Z’s favorite singer-songwriter Laufey bewitched audiences at her sold-out Chicago show during her “A Matter of Time” world tour.
Laufey has experienced a boom in popularity following her song “From the Start” going viral on TikTok in 2023. She has just finished her first arena tour.
While approaching the concert venue, I immediately could tell that the people walking nearby were attending Laufey’s show just by the style of their outfits — and most notably, the bows in their hair. Laufey’s fans take after her dreamy and feminine fashion style and they never miss a chance to dress up.
Opening the concert was Suki Waterhouse, a British indie pop artist, model, and actress. Her music and performance was very different from Laufey’s: grunge and moody, and the contrast between them was very fun to see.
Laufey made her grand entrance in a sparkly ball gown while singing “Clockwork,” the opening track of her newest album, “A Matter of Time” (2025). She followed the energetic jazz song with the bouncy viral single, “Lover Girl” and “Dreamer” from her album “Bewitched” (2023), and “Falling Behind,” from her debut album “Everything I Know About Love” (2022).
Laufey took her fans on an emotional roller coaster by following these fun songs with emotional ones like “Too Little, Too Late,” “Promise,” and “Goddess.” She told the audience that she does this on purpose to convey the contradicting feelings of being a human.
A notable act of the show was when Laufey transitioned to the smaller B-stage with a few members of the band to create a jazz club. She performed jazzier versions of some of her songs like “Valentine,” “Fragile,” and “While You Were Sleeping.” Laufey fit right in to this setting because she grew up listening to jazz.
The visuals were very dreamy. The main set piece resembled a castle, and Laufey climbed up and down it to reach the top, where there was a swinging chair. Dancers pranced around the stage. During one song, they donned tutus and pointe shoes.
The last song Laufey played for Chicago was her heartfelt “Letter to My 13 Year Old Self,” where Laufey tells her younger self to be confident because her dreams will come true. She told the audience to never give up on their dreams, because you can never be sure what the future holds.
The “A Matter of Time Tour” has been very well received by fans, some considering it the best concert they’ve ever been to. It’s been proved that Laufey’s voice and stage presence can enchant a sold-out arena full of people.
From theaters with several hundred people to arenas of 20,000, Laufey has made it very far, and surely the best is yet to come for her.
